AMENDMENT TO DUTIES TO ADDRESS THE FLOW OF ILLICIT DRUGS ACROSS OUR SOUTHERN BORDER

President Trump’s executive order, issued on March 6, 2025, amends certain tariffs imposed on goods from Mexico in an attempt to reduce drug trafficking across the southern border of the United States. The order makes certain modifications to existing tariff rates and provides a reduction in the duty rate for potash.
According to the executive order, the purpose of this change is to support the American automotive industry by minimizing disruption to auto workers and reducing barriers to trade with Mexico. While the order does not go into detail about how exactly it will achieve these goals, it highlights that the United States has a vested interest in maintaining close economic and national security ties with Mexico.
