MAKING THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA SAFE AND BEAUTIFUL

This executive order by President Trump aims to improve public safety and beautify public spaces in Washington, D.C., the capital city. The order directs various federal agencies, including the Department of Interior and General Services Administration, to take immediate action to remove homeless encampments on National Park Service land within the District of Columbia.
The order also calls for a coordinated beautification plan to improve public spaces, sidewalks, parks, highways, roads, and transit systems in D.C., with private-sector participation encouraged. This could include efforts to remove graffiti from buildings and monuments, plant trees and flowers, and clean up trash.
While the order’s intent is admirable, it raises several concerns regarding privacy and civil liberties. Specifically, the directive to remove homeless encampments on National Park Service land could result in forcible removal of individuals without adequate notice or due process protections. Furthermore, there are concerns that a coordinated beautification plan could lead to increased surveillance and control over public spaces by the government.
Overall, this executive order highlights the need for careful consideration of potential impacts on civil liberties and privacy when implementing policy in public spaces.
